Council adopts road-design ordinance, advances updated flood standards and approves calendar items

During the Jan. 7 regular meeting the Newberry County Council completed several routine but consequential actions.
Ordinance 11-01-2024, an amendment to Chapter 91 to adopt road and development design standards and specifications, was presented for third reading. A motion was made and seconded; the chairman confirmed his affirmative vote and the motion carried unanimously. The ordinance was adopted on third reading.
Council opened a public hearing on Ordinance 12-01-2024 (Chapter 152), which would adopt updated standards for reduction of flood hazards. No members of the public spoke during the hearing; the council closed the hearing and adopted the ordinance on its public second reading by unanimous vote.
Council also adopted the proposed 2025 county council committee meeting schedule and the countywide 2025 budget calendar. The county administrator noted key budget review dates for council involvement (March 25and March 26) and reminded members state law requires three readings and a public hearing before third reading of budget ordinances.
On appointments, council reappointed Patrick Metz and reappointed Doug Hill (transcript later referenced the appointee as 'Hitt'); motions to confirm were made, seconded and approved. Council then heard a public comment on neighborhood gun violence and received updates from county staff on grants and infrastructure projects.
