SBA briefs council on disaster loans and extended application deadline after Hurricane Helene

During public comments, Antoine Harris, public affairs specialist for the U.S. Small Business Administration covering the Midlands, urged the council to share information with constituents about SBA disaster-recovery loans after Hurricane Helene. Harris said the SBA and FEMA have been coordinating since late September and that the SBA had received about 15,500 applicants across the state.
Harris said he learned the local application deadline for the Newberry area had been extended to Jan. 28 (it had been Jan. 7). He encouraged council members to publicize the extension so affected homeowners, renters, nonprofits and businesses could apply. "As of right now, anyone affected by Helene, any non-profit, business, homeowner, or renter, is eligible to apply for aid," he said, and offered to email information to county staff.
Council thanked Harris for the information; no formal county action was taken on the comment.
