At the January 7 meeting the Newberry County Council completed its organizational business by electing leadership for 2025. Using a viva voce (voice vote) process presided over by the county attorney, Reverend Scurry nominated Nick Shealy for council chair; council closed nominations, voted, and announced Shealy as chair for 2025.
The council then opened nominations for vice chair. Members nominated Carl Cease and Travis Reeder; votes were taken by voice in the order nominations were presented and the tally read into the record. Councilmembers Nick Shealy, Stuart Smith, Leon Fulmer and Todd Johnson were recorded for Cease; Travis Reeder and Johnny Scurry recorded for Reeder; the outcome made Carl Cease the vice chair for 2025.
The attorney noted council custom to record a vote even in uncontested nominations. Members congratulated the newly elected chair and vice chair and moved on to the regular agenda.
Votes and roll-call affirmations were read into the record during the session; the council used the recorded voice votes as its official tally.
