Board approves filling sanitarian role to maintain MDH‑delegated inspections

Environmental health staff told the board the county needs to fill the sanitarian role to maintain delegated functions under the Minnesota Department of Health, including licensing inspections of restaurants, daycares and lodging, septic permitting and nuisance responses. The position has been vacant since August 2025.
Staff said a variable‑hour environmental health technician has completed certification requirements and is the planned internal candidate to move into the full‑time sanitarian role effective Feb. 1. "Given the scope of the delegated authority, regulatory requirements and our increasing inspection activity, we're requesting the backfill of this position," staff said.
Commissioners asked whether recent heavy demolition and other construction work had driven inspection demand; staff said some large projects have increased workload and that return inspections and asbestos sampling continue to require staff time. The board voted to fill the position and thanked staff for interim coverage.
