Edgefield County Council on Aug. 6 approved several routine but consequential items in unanimous votes, including participation in an opioid litigation settlement allocation, multiple ordinance readings, and an equipment purchase for county maintenance operations.
The council adopted Resolution 24-25-0001 to accept a national opioid settlement and participate in South Carolina’s allocation agreement; staff said those funds will be distributed by county grant process and previously have been used for education programs, EMS support and Narcan distribution. Outside counsel (from Spartanburg and New York) recommended approval. The motion passed unanimously.
Council also completed second reading and approval of Ordinance 23-24-005 (nuisance ordinance amendments) and Ordinance 23-24-004 (Tri-County Solicitor budget amendment adding $170,321 in revenue and expenditures for salaries and benefits). Both motions passed on voice/hand unanimous votes.
For capital needs, the council approved the low bid to purchase a Takeuchi TL10 V2 track loader and attachments for $87,410 for use by roads and bridges and the law enforcement center; attachments will be paid from proceeds of sold equipment and machine costs split with Law Enforcement Center funds.
The council convened an executive session for legal briefings on pending litigation (three matters) and an economic development briefing regarding a fee-in-lieu agreement; the public session resumed with no action reported from executive session.
Next steps: Funds from the opioid settlement will be subject to the county’s grant approval process; the equipment will be procured per bid procedures; ordinances will proceed per statutory notice and implementation steps.
