Wethersfield High revises course catalog with AP precalculus and a geometry lab option
Summary
Wethersfield High School presented catalog updates on Jan. 27 that include converting honors precalculus to AP precalculus, adding a geometry-with-lab course (extra period for remediation), simplifying course names and expanding CTE pathways; presenters cited about 300 AP tests last year with roughly 125 students scoring 3 or above.
WETHERSFIELD, Conn. — Wethersfield High School outlined several course-catalog changes and pathway expansions to the Board of Education on Jan. 27, saying the shifts are intended to increase access to college-credit opportunities and provide more targeted support for students who need it.
Siobhan O'Connor, the high school principal, described two primary changes for next year: converting the honors precalculus course to AP precalculus to allow students to seek college credit, and introducing a geometry-with-lab course that adds an extra period for remediation and skills support.
"Last year alone, we had 300 tests, representing about 125 students who all got threes or above on their AP test," O'Connor said when describing AP participation and success. She noted that offering AP-level precalculus and expanding labs are intended to both broaden access and preserve fiscal neutrality where possible by reorganizing existing FTE (full-time equivalent) allocations.
O'Connor also described changes that remove barriers to CTE (career and technical education) pathways: the culinary sequence was restructured so students can enter the culinary-arts track after completing one of two prerequisite courses, and course names were simplified (for example, ecology and evolutionary biology was renamed Environmental Science) to improve clarity for students and families.
The district highlighted 11 different pathways in the catalog tied to career readiness, and staff said a parent-night presentation on Feb. 4 will spotlight the catalog and pathway options. Board members responded positively and encouraged promotion of the catalog so students and families can plan course sequences in advance.
