Moreland board reviews midyear LCAP progress; absenteeism improves, mainstreaming dips slightly

At its Thursday meeting the Moreland School District board received a midyear Local Control and Accountability Plan (LCAP) update that combined outcome metrics, implementation notes, and midyear expenditures. Presenters said some assessment data (I-Ready) remain in progress but highlighted several midyear takeaways: textbook sufficiency at 100%, a higher reclassification rate for English learners (8.2%), a decline in chronic absenteeism from 13% to 10.4% so far this year, and a slight decline in the proportion of students spending at least 80% of their day in general education (from 65% to 61%).
"We're very excited to see, this midway through the year... chronic absenteeism down from 13 percent to 10.4 percent," a presenter said, calling the drop "a huge win" and noting the district plans attendance recovery strategies. Presenters also noted reasons the least restrictive environment metric can change (IEP amendments, pull-outs for intervention, scheduling) and described several levers the district uses to increase mainstreaming, including push'in models and scheduling adjustments.
The report covered the district's communities-of-practice professional development, early literacy work, math curriculum pilots, behavior supports (including BCBA trainings), and community engagement activities such as parent education, DELAC participation and student-led service projects. Board members asked clarifying questions about how some metrics are calculated (sources for GreatSchools and state data) and how one'time funds are budgeted across years.
What's next: Presenters said additional data (I-Ready windows) will be available later in February and that staff will provide updates in the Friday report and at the June LCAP review. The board then approved the midyear LCAP item by voice vote as part of the meeting business.
