Allegan council adopts comprehensive zoning rewrite, makes ADUs a right

At the July 14 meeting the Allegan City Council held a public hearing and approved Ordinance 5-29 and Resolution 25.23 to adopt a complete rewrite of the city’s zoning ordinance and zoning map.
City staff said the Planning Commission spent the past year overhauling the ordinance and map and held public hearings on April 21 and June 16. "The new zoning ordinance and zoning map creates several avenues to build more houses in the city of Allegan including accessory dwelling units as a right in all residential zone districts," staff told council during the second reading.
Staff displayed the proposed zoning map and noted two small changes the planning commission made before forwarding the ordinance to council: along Airway the commission preserved a residential feel by not designating both sides as mixed industrial-commercial, and along Swan (M-89/Lincoln area) the commission recommended residential designation for properties fronting Swan except a car wash identified in the packet.
No members of the public spoke during the hearing and the council moved to adopt the resolution; the presiding official reported the ordinance passed with seven yeas.
Staff noted the full ordinance and mapping materials were available in the council packet and on the city website for public review. The adoption will take effect according to the municipal ordinance schedule and any procedural posting requirements.
