Council backs Friends of Oakwood for Wreaths Across America event at Oakwood Cemetery

The Allegan City Council on Jan. 27 gave its support to the Friends of Oakwood Cemetery to participate in the national Wreaths Across America program, an annual volunteer effort to place wreaths on veterans' graves.
Amanda Strickfaden, speaking for the Friends group, told council the effort would aim to place wreaths at Oakwood and Blessed Sacrament cemeteries, covering an estimated 1,000 to 1,500 veterans' graves. She described logistics including traffic and parking coordination with the police department, off-site staging (high school or middle school parking), shipment drop-off and post-event box recycling, and collection or mulching of wreath materials.
Council members indicated staff should coordinate operational details. A motion to authorize participation and to have staff work with the Friends group carried on the record.
