Parkrose recognizes SAGE mentoring partnership, highlights literacy and math support
Summary
Senior volunteers from SAGE (Senior Advocates for Generational Equity) presented the results of a seven-year mentoring partnership with Parkrose SD 3, reporting one-on-one tutoring, 54 middle-school literacy participants, and grant-funded support; board members thanked volunteers and confirmed no district general-fund dollars support SAGE.
Parkrose SD 3 recognized the work of SAGE (Senior Advocates for Generational Equity) on Jan. 26, when volunteers described a multi-year program pairing older adults with elementary and middle school students for reading and math support.
"Between the three of us, we are working with 10 students individually twice a week during this school year," Carol Sweeney told the board, describing in-person and online mentoring that the group has sustained since 2020. Presenters said the middle-school literacy effort currently supports 54 students and that a math 'push-in' model at Prescott serves about 102 students through small-group support and lunchtime clubs.
SAGE leaders described their funding model as privately supported by foundations and grants. "This program has been sponsored by SAGE," one presenter said, adding that the group buys Chromebooks, books and small honoraria and relies on partner foundations named during the presentation. A board member clarified publicly that "it’s really important that there are no district dollars that go into this program," and praised SAGE for its grant-writing and volunteer recruitment.
Board members and student representatives thanked SAGE volunteers for the time, continuity and reported outcomes. The board received a short video made by a district teacher highlighting student-mentor interactions and retention of mentors across years.
Next steps: SAGE invited board members to an end-of-year celebration and reiterated a request for help recruiting new mentors; board members said they would share information with community groups and encourage volunteers to contact school staff.
