Community corrections asks commissioners to reapply for 2026 grants, requests $428,280 increase

Steve Bills, representing community corrections and collaborating departments, asked the board to approve reapplication for 2026 grants that cover community corrections, probation and drug court. Bills said the group is requesting an additional $428,280 this year, about a 42.29% increase from current allocations, with line-item requests described for community corrections, probation and drug court.

Bills said some statewide facility closures could free up funds that might be reallocated, and he noted an expectation among agencies of a modest state cut (he estimated about 5%) in many programs. Commissioners asked clarifying questions about timing and the anticipated opening of the women’s center, which Bills and others said is close to completion and may affect service needs and funding allocations.

The board voted to approve the reapplications for community corrections grants and associated programs; the motion passed with three ayes. No guarantee of additional funding was made—the request is to apply for increased funds and to pursue available state grant opportunities.
