Director outlines maintenance needs, campground closures and donor-funded bathhouse work

Seth, the Jennings County parks director, used his report to flag near-term maintenance needs, seasonal campground plans and equipment repairs requiring either nonreverting funds or county support.
He told the board a historic schoolhouse on park property has a significant roof leak that has rotted rafters and damaged ceilings. "I started to receive bids," Seth said; he said he will request funds from the county council if needed and will seek grant support from preservation organizations before asking the council to pay the cost. Board members suggested contacting Indiana Landmarks and the Indiana Historical Society for potential funding assistance.
On operations, Seth said Eagle Lake campground will close for the season beginning the first Monday in November and reopen in April; a camp host will remain onsite during winter months. The board also reviewed recent wildlife work: contractors trapped two beavers, cleared the overflow and monitored the lake for additional activity.
Seth described recent equipment issues and costs: the parks bought a new air compressor; a skid-mower spindle failure requires an estimated $915 repair and an older mower may need roughly $5,000 in repairs or replacement next year. He also reported a recently purchased Dodge Ram is titled but still awaiting license plates.
A private donor, Donnie Miller, has offered funds to renovate an older bathhouse (toilets, sinks, roof, doors and other interior work). Seth said Miller indicated he might spend approximately $30,500 toward that renovation and that the donor had previously contributed to other park facilities.
The director said he is researching a new reservation system and will demo CamSpot, an app-based vendor, to try to reduce phone calls and simplify camping reservations. He also said the board's master-plan deadline for 2026 is approaching; he suggested contracting the work if internal capacity is insufficient and noted prior master-plan work was done with input from "Greg" at the Indiana Department of Natural Resources.
Next steps: staff will collect bids for the schoolhouse repairs, continue equipment cost estimates, run a demo of the reservation app and prepare documentation for any county-council requests. The board reiterated it prefers to exhaust grant options prior to requesting county capital funding.
