Hemet names Cameron Phillips interim fire chief; council approves employment agreement

The Hemet City Council on Jan. 27 approved a resolution appointing Cameron Phillips as interim fire chief and authorizing an employment contract. The motion passed unanimously.
Staff introduced Phillips as a retired Garden Grove fire chief who had served as Hemet’s interim fire chief in 2021 during COVID‑era staffing strains. Phillips told the council he has more than 30 years of experience, described returning to Hemet as a privilege and said he looks forward to moving the department forward during the interim period.
Councilmember Peterson moved to adopt the resolution approving the interim appointment and employment agreement; Mayor Pro Tem Mailes seconded. A roll call indicated five yes votes and the motion passed 5–0.
The appointment is interim and the council did not record any amendment to the proposed employment agreement at the meeting. Staff said the position had been vacant for several months and noted engine deliveries connected to past recruitment timing. The council did not set an additional timeline for a permanent recruitment at the meeting.
