Hemet’s City Council voted 5–0 on Jan. 27 to authorize a five‑year police dispatch services agreement with the City of Canyon Lake, accepting staff's recommendation and approving a joint conflict‑of‑interest waiver.
Acting Hemet police staff told the council the contract would expand Hemet’s regional dispatching and add two funded dispatcher positions, raising funded dispatch roles from 15 to 17. Staff said Hemet handled roughly 95,000 CAD calls in 2025 versus about 4,680 for Canyon Lake, and that the low call volume from Canyon Lake would not materially reduce services to Hemet residents. The added staffing was described as part of meeting a goal to implement emergency medical dispatch (EMD) by Jan. 1, 2027.
Jeremy Smith, identified in remarks as mayor of Canyon Lake, spoke in support of the agreement and described the partnership as a long‑sought regional collaboration; he urged council to adopt staff’s recommendation.
Mayor Pro Tem Mailes moved to adopt the resolution authorizing the city manager to execute the agreement (including the joint conflict‑of‑interest waiver); Council Member Lodge seconded. The clerk recorded five yes votes and the motion passed 5–0.
The agreement as presented will be executed by the city manager; staff said it is intended to bolster regional cooperation and to increase Hemet’s dispatch capacity without diminishing current service levels to Hemet residents.
What’s next: Staff will finalize contract documents and return any final execution paperwork as required by municipal procedures. No additional council direction or amendment was recorded at the meeting.
