Zephyrhills council adopts ordinance standardizing cremains-area marker sizes

The Zephyrhills City Council unanimously adopted ordinance 1511‑26 on second reading on Jan. 26, revising the city code for installation markers and monuments in the cremains area.
City staff explained the change was prompted by field measurements showing the new cremains spaces could not uniformly accommodate the larger headstone sizes previously authorized. Ricardo (city staff) reported there are 27 unsold plots in the cremains area and 53 plots that have been sold or interred but currently lack headstones; of those 53, 36 are reserved but not yet active and 17 are occupied. "The ordinance currently allows up to 17‑by‑17 headstones, but the physical space available is not uniform," Ricardo said, and staff recommended standardizing dimensions so markers reliably fit each plot.
Council asked whether staff would notify plot owners; staff said they have contact information for owners and will inform them of the council’s decision. After public hearing and brief questions about sizes and outreach, Councilmember moved approval on second reading; the motion passed unanimously.
Next steps: staff will notify affected plot owners and update cemetery permitting procedures to reflect the revised marker dimensions.
