"The $200,000 that is put into there is based on the number of calls in the county," a staff presenter said, and added that deductions — notably transport/flight insurance and the awards banquet — reduce the distributable pool. The presenter said transport insurance payments rose from $37 to about $160 per person and that, after insurance and banquet costs, about $130,000 remains to split among qualifying calls.
Commissioners raised alternatives, including cutting banquet spending to increase the incentive pool or seeking an increase to the $200,000 line item. Staff replied the county was running negative in that budget line and had prioritized other cuts; they said the incentive line was not reduced despite overall constraints. Commissioners asked staff to document the concern for the commission’s quarterly report to county council.
Several speakers also asked how validation of incentive eligibility is handled; staff said eligibility is tied to annual submission requirements for the firefighter association’s insurance policy and that staff validates those submissions each year.
The commission voted to combine the incentive committee with a newly labeled budget-and-finance committee to align budgeting and incentive oversight; commissioners noted incentive-specific timing might still require specialized meetings around the budget calendar.
