Commissioners extend North Mechanical service contract and discuss jail laundry replacements

The Fayette County commissioners approved a one-year extension of the county's service/maintenance contract with North Mechanical and discussed separate quotes for new commercial washers and dryers for the county jail.

Maintenance Director Josh Jarbo recommended switching from the prior three-year arrangement to a one-year renewal with North Mechanical because of the firm's on-site technician and local responsiveness. "We've used North for quite some years," Jarbo said; commissioners approved the recommended one-year service-maintenance contract for $19,928 (motion by Tracy; second by Dale; voice vote: 3 ayes).

Jarbo also presented quotes for larger commercial washers and dryers and explained higher-end models include broader warranties that cover moving parts and electronics. He said front-line machines have been in service five or more years and replacement-package install estimates range from about $25,000 to $30,000 depending on model and warranty; Jarbo said he will continue to seek lower-cost Speed Queen-equivalent quotes and clarified the county is still identifying a funding source.

Commissioners asked about urgency and budget responsibility; Jarbo said the equipment is not yet an emergency but replacement is prudent before a failure forces staff to transport laundry off-site. The board directed staff to continue collecting quotes and identify potential funding sources before returning with a procurement recommendation.

Next steps: Jarbo to obtain additional quotes (including Speed Queen equivalents), check warranties and return with cost and funding options.
