Riverside proclaims June Pride Month; UCR and RCC representatives accept proclamations

Mayor Patricia Slack Dawson read the proclamation citing the Stonewall riots as Pride’s origin and the city’s commitment to an inclusive environment. DJ Brown, assistant director of UC Riverside’s LGBT Resource Center, accepted the proclamation on behalf of UCR and said the recognition was meaningful: "It is my hope that LGBTQ+ students across the intersections of identity continue to have safer and braver spaces," Brown said.
Al Wyatt Forbes, counselor and coordinator of LGBTQ+ student services at Riverside City College and representative of the Rainbow Engagement Center, described RCC’s center (open since 2021) and urged support for permanent staffing for the program. Councilmember Cervantes noted partnerships and local organizations that attended recent events and affirmed support for undocumented queer community members.
Why it matters: The proclamation is symbolic but public recognition highlights continued city support for LGBTQ+ campus services and community resources. RCC staff said their center has grown and is moving toward permanent staffing instead of volunteer coverage.
