Johnston County adopted the 2025 Cape Fear Regional Hazard Mitigation Plan Jan. 20 after a presentation by emergency management staff.
Emergency Management Director Sandy Wood explained that the multi‑jurisdiction Cape Fear plan updates hazard mitigation measures, is renewed every five years and helps localities become eligible for federal post‑disaster mitigation funding. Wood said the county currently has two shelters available (one through a local ministry and partnerships with Salvation Army and Smithfield Rescue Mission for families and children) and described steps the county is taking to push preparedness information to social media, the county website, and the county EM alert page.
Commissioners asked about shelter notification methods; Wood said staff would post updates to Facebook, the county website and the EM alerts page and coordinate with partner agencies for additional sheltering as needed. A commissioner moved, seconded and the board adopted the resolution by voice vote.
What’s next: Emergency management will continue public messaging about shelter locations and will use the adopted plan to support grant applications and post‑disaster assistance eligibility.
