The City of Commerce on Jan. 27 approved a $25,000 allocation to provide legal counseling and “Know Your Rights” outreach to residents affected by recent U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement activity.
City Manager (staff) told the council the funding would come from the project management fund and be used to contract with an immigration attorney to offer confidential legal counseling and community sessions. “The staffs requested approval of an allocation of $25,000 from our project management fund to provide legal counseling and guidance to any residents who had been impacted by the recent ICE raids,” the City Manager said during the presentation.
Mayor Naines and several councilmembers said the measure was intended to help vulnerable residents who may feel fearful or isolated. “Our commitment has always been to this community, whether there is legal status or not,” a councilmember said in support of the item.
Council directed staff to track usage and report back as the allocation approaches exhaustion so the council can consider additional action. The motion to approve carried unanimously.
The award is intended to be confidential and accessible; staff said they will provide regular performance updates and return to council if further resources are needed.
