Community group seeks $30,000 from Story County for Reed & Island Corner restoration

A community restoration group asked the Story County Board of Supervisors on Jan. 27 for $30,000 to support early restoration work at the historic Reed/Island Corner property.
Presenters Jan Gammon, Brenda McGuire and Kathy Mintz described the site’s history — from a 1920s service station and motel on the Lincoln Highway to a planned transportation museum — and outlined immediate needs including deteriorated station doors, storm doors for motel units, kitchen insulation and neon-sign repairs. They said the city has told them it can no longer maintain the site and that a transfer of ownership to the group is expected this spring pending attorney negotiations.
Gammon said the group has written grants and obtained promotion and volunteer support from Jefferson and Lincoln Highway associations and national historians, but still needs cash for early repairs and authentic materials required for National Register restoration standards. County supervisors expressed support but said budget work sessions are just beginning and that any county contribution would depend on the board’s FY26 budgeting process.
Next steps: Group will continue grant-seeking and conclude negotiations with the city on the transfer; the board will consider the request during upcoming budget discussions.
