Clay County proclaims Holocaust Remembrance Day; rabbi urges citizens to remember

A member of the board read the proclamation aloud, which summarized the Nazi regime’s systematic persecution and murder of millions — including approximately 6,000,000 Jews — between 1933 and 1945 and cited the United Nations’ observance and a prior gubernatorial proclamation. After a motion, a second and an 'aye' vote, the proclamation passed without recorded opposition.
Rabbi Maya Glasser, invited to speak after the proclamation, said that remembering the Holocaust is a "sacred value." She urged attendees to study painful history and suggested a simple civic action: learn about someone different from yourself. "Only by learning about those who are different from us can we change this world in which the Holocaust could happen," she said.
The proclamation calls on Clay County residents to observe the date with ceremonies, prayers and educational programs and to reaffirm opposition to antisemitism and all forms of bigotry. The board’s formal adoption places the recognition on the county record; the proclamation itself cites the January 27, 1945 liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau as well as subsequent local and international recognitions of the date.
No public speakers spoke against or amended the proclamation during the meeting. The board recorded the item as adopted and moved on to other agenda items.
