Summary
Shelly Simon of the Colorado Department of Labor and Employment’s Office of Just Transition told commissioners the office will launch a statewide initiative and meet locally to design leadership development and peer programs to support workers displaced by coal closures.
Shelly Simon, representing the Colorado Department of Labor and Employment’s Office of Just Transition, briefed the Board of Moffat County Commissioners on Jan. 27 about a statewide initiative to support workers displaced by coal-mine and plant closures.
Simon said the office will launch leadership development, coaching and peer-support programming for impacted workers and families and will work with local partners in the county’s transition area. She introduced staff members Lynn Fagoni (transition navigator), Kelly Gatlin (career coach) and Christy McPherson (economic development and community outreach), and said partners Brent Schulte and Jason Haglund will meet with community members to learn local needs.
Jason Haglund described his background and emphasized the importance of community conversations, saying he looks forward to meeting local leaders to design sustainable supports. Simon asked the board for input and invited commissioners and local stakeholders to engage as the office develops programs for the community.
No formal funding or action was taken during the briefing; the presentation was informational and staff will follow up with local meetings and outreach.
