Douglas County approves closed-captioning contract for legislative chamber; consent agenda passes with one abstention

The Douglas County Board of Commissioners on Jan. 27 approved a contract with the National Captioning Institute to provide closed-captioning services for meetings held in the legislative chambers and televised on Cox channel 18.

Commissioner Kavanaugh described the service as an accessibility improvement that will help people with hearing disabilities follow meetings; he said the contract appeared to cost "someplace under $10,000 a year." County Clerk Dan Ashtaug confirmed the service would apply to meetings broadcast from the legislative chambers. Sybil Spencer-Hilton, participating by Zoom, clarified the contract covers any meeting held in the chambers and broadcast from that location, whether city or county meetings.
