Fayetteville youth present secure firearm storage resolution to council; members back low‑barrier approach

FAYETTEVILLE — Members of the Fayetteville Youth Advisory Council and the Fayetteville High School chapter of Students Demand Action urged the City Council to adopt a secure‑firearm storage resolution that would prioritize public education and outreach.
Chance (staff contact for the Youth Advisory Council) introduced the students. Blythe, chair of the youth council, and Harper, from Students Demand Action, told the council the resolution aims to distribute information about safe storage to families and schools and to connect residents to low‑cost or free gun‑locking resources.
“We believe if it could save one life, then we’d be doing our job,” a student presenter said, framing the measure as educational rather than regulatory.
Presenters cited national youth firearm trends and research that, they said, show household safe‑storage measures and child access prevention laws correlate with reduced youth fatalities. They pointed to comparable initiatives in other Arkansas cities (including Little Rock) where letters to families and school handbook inclusion were used.
Council members praised the students’ work and discussed ways to broaden exposure (digital and paper distribution, partner networks) and to provide free gun locks to residents who cannot afford them. The council expected the resolution to be placed on next week’s consent agenda for a vote.
