Fayetteville City Council on Tuesday approved the annual property tax levy to be collected in 2026, setting the consolidated rate at 6.8 mills.
The ordinance earmarks 2.3 mills for general fund operations, 0.4 mills for the firemen’s pension and relief fund, 0.4 mills for the policeman’s pension and relief fund, 2.5 mills for Fayetteville Public Library operations and 1.2 mills for library expansion. City staff told the council this is the same consolidated millage used by the city since 2016 except for one year when a rollback occurred.
After a brief round of clarifying questions — including Councilmember Moore asking whether additional mills are available (staff said up to five mills for general fund) and Minister Jones asking about the outstanding library expansion debt — Councilmember Bob Stafford moved to suspend the rules and advance the item to third and final reading. Clerk Paxton recorded unanimous 'Yes' votes on the motion and on final adoption. Staff estimated the outstanding library expansion debt at about $15,000,000 and said there are roughly four to five years remaining; staff offered to follow up with exact payoff figures.
The ordinance directs the city clerk to file a certified copy with the Washington County clerk so the levy may be placed on the tax roll.
