Commissioner Janet Allured said the commemorative plaque honoring local history has been ordered and paid for and that grants have covered the cost of the marker and reception items. "It is on order, has not been delivered yet. It is paid for," she said, and added that she obtained a grant from the Curtis Sykes fund and additional funding from the Methodist Foundation to cover remaining balances and reception costs.
Allured said the unveiling ceremony is planned for Feb. 28 to coincide with the end of Black History Month and the start of Women’s History Month. She said invitations will be sent to city officials and that she is coordinating with Sharon Killian of the Black Heritage Commission. "We've decided to have the unveiling ceremony on February 28," Allured said.
Allured credited support from local faith groups, naming the Methodist Church and United Women in Faith, and said commission members with ties to Saint James Methodist should extend personal invitations in addition to written ones. She also asked that staff circulate details and called for commissioners to participate in outreach to encourage attendance.
The commission took no formal vote on the plaque; Allured said staff will distribute invitations and additional logistical information as the date approaches.
