Commission authorizes recruiting contract and approves $115,000 settlement for federal case

After returning from a closed meeting on personnel, real estate and threatened litigation, Attorney Plunkett reported two public motions for the commission to consider.
First, the commission authorized engaging MGT recruiting services to assist with filling the general counsel position at a fee of $35,000, to be paid from the general-fund contingency. The motion was moved and seconded and recorded as carried.
Second, the commission approved a settlement of the claims brought by Darius Williams and others against the city and Sheriff Rountree in the Southern District of Georgia in the amount of $115,000. Attorney Plunkett identified the pending case by docket number; commissioners moved and unanimously approved the settlement.
Both items were reported publicly at the end of the Jan. 27 session after executive-session discussion. The motions were handled in open session following the closed meeting, consistent with the commission's announcement and attorney report.
