Board reviews draft 2026–27 school calendar; trustees question timing of breaks and snow-day sequencing

Assistant Superintendent Christina presented the district's draft 2026–27 calendar and walked trustees through key dates: a proposed 183-day student calendar, two superintendent conference days, three built-in snow days, and an academic year beginning Wednesday, Sept. 2. Christina said the draft recommends beginning the student year before Labor Day and includes observances such as Yom Kippur and Juneteenth.

Trustees discussed trade-offs across the year. One board member said the spring recess timing felt "unusual" and questioned adding an April 16 conditional recess day that staff later warned could be the first to be taken if snow days are used. Several trustees asked whether AP and IB exam schedules were affected; staff said APs usually start around May 1 and IBs can begin slightly earlier but that the current draft should not conflict with typical exam windows.

Questions also focused on the distribution of snow days and the long December break. One trustee observed that two weeks off for Christmas can be lengthy, and another suggested shifting specific days back into school if attendance patterns make some December days impractical. Staff noted the calendar remains a draft and that the board will consider final adoption later in the budget/calendar cycle; they also committed to providing further details on AP/IB scheduling if trustees want them.

The board did not vote on the calendar at the meeting; it was presented for consideration and will return for formal action after any revisions.
