Hood introduced the Gurnee Cares Commission, led by Trustee Kevin Woodside, saying the panel will emphasize funding and volunteer coordination with area nonprofits after the mayor learned that Woodland School District identified about 30 students who listed homelessness. Hood said initial contributions to nonprofits will be announced in the spring.
The mayor also announced a newly formed Art Commission intended to elevate local artistic talent and build on the work schools already do. He praised Great Wolf Lodge for efforts to employ and recognize people with special needs and said the village will continue programs such as block-party mini-grants (30 events supported with a $500 village contribution each) and hometown-hero banners that honor veterans.
Hood recounted recognizing 54 veterans during the year, cited the plaque honoring Medal of Honor recipient Allen Lynch, and thanked partners who help run school and teacher-recognition efforts. The presentation described programs and planned contributions rather than formal ordinances.
Hood framed these community efforts as part of a 'better together' approach that combines village resources with nonprofit and faith-based partners to meet needs that persist despite Gurnee’s overall affluence.
