Madison County updates Weisenberger Road project; environmental review underway

Madison County staff gave an update on the Weisenberger Road reconstruction project, saying the environmental assessment is underway and the total project cost is about $20,000,000. "It's about $20,000,000 total project cost," said Keith O'Keefe.
The presentation said surveying is complete and consultants have finished wetland delineation and Phase I field work; an environmental site assessment report has been submitted to the Mississippi Department of Transportation (MDOT) for review. O'Keefe said the project's purpose-and-needs statement has been approved by MDOT and the Federal Highway Administration, which establishes the baseline for the environmental assessment.
Conceptual design is largely complete, O'Keefe said, but bridge recommendations and an ongoing hydrologic and hydraulic analysis will determine final bridge length, height and alignment. The county is coordinating with the railroad on the planned at-grade crossing; O'Keefe said the county will replace the creek bridge and likely raise its elevation to reduce flood risk.
Near-term steps include final technical reports and submission of a draft environmental assessment to MDOT by the next quarterly report and a public hearing expected in April or May. O'Keefe said the county expects the environmental assessment to be finished by early summer, with design completion targeted by September 2027. The county plans to advertise, bid and award the construction contract in 2029 and estimated construction would take about 15 to 18 months, placing project completion in the early 2030 timeframe.
O'Keefe described the scope as a four through-lane project configured as a five-lane cross-section (including a turn lane) over approximately 0.7 miles. He emphasized continuing coordination with state agencies and the railroad as the county wraps technical work and prepares for public comment.
The next public step is the April–May public hearing and submission of the draft environmental assessment to MDOT; the county will continue hydraulic analysis and bridge recommendation work before final design.
