County safety committee report flags low participation; board authorizes chair to sign 300 logs

Leslie Barlow Hunter, contracts and risk management, presented the annual safety committee memo at the Jan. 27 meeting, reporting that quarterly inspections were completed and required trainings largely finished, but that department participation and timely incident reporting have declined.
"A lot of the same things were voiced in the questionnaire," Hunter said, noting the county saw "an increase in claims, not by much, 5 or 6 overall" compared with prior years. Hunter told the board many departments submit minimal information and committee attendance has fallen despite attempts to hold virtual meetings.
Board members pressed for stronger follow-up. Commissioner Minty proposed the chair send a memo to department liaisons identifying nonattending departments and requested monthly reports on attendance so the board can remind departments of requirements. An unidentified commissioner suggested setting a threshold for further action if absences continue.
Separately, the board moved to authorize the chair to sign the "300 logs" for the county's safety reporting; the motion passed by voice vote. One commissioner moved the authorization and Commissioner Minty called the vote, with ayes recorded.
Board members and an insurance representative also encouraged a positive approach: Greg Gilmore of Great British Insurance commended the county's low labor-comp claims relative to similar entities and urged maintaining momentum on safety work.
The board did not place a disciplinary policy on the record; it asked staff to prepare the requested liaison memo and to provide monthly attendance updates.
