The Verona Common Council took the following formal actions on Sept. 22, 2025.
• Approve minutes (09/08/2025). Motion by Alder Tucker Long; second by Alder Helmke. Approved by voice vote.
• Authorize payment of bills totaling $582,963. Alder Helmke explained large payments to Danton Construction Services ($130,417) for Epic Park improvements and R & T Vogeli Excavating ($63,318) for sidewalk work; motion passed by voice vote.
• Deny liability claims filed by Madeline Anderson (sewer backup on 07/30/2025 at 304 E. Verona Ave.), Philip Ender and Pat Ali. Staff and the city insurer recommended denial under Wisconsin case law; motions carried by voice vote.
• Approve renovation budget not to exceed $40,000 for the building at 130 North Franklin Street (former Redeemer Bible Church) to prepare it for city use; funding to come from revenue generated by leasing the building. Motion passed; staff said the building should be ready for use Jan. 2026.
• Approve reserve Class B intoxicating liquor and Class B fermented malt beverage license for Yishan Asian Eatery (507 West Verona Ave.), contingent on final payment and inspections; motion passed. Approve a temporary Class B fermented malt beverage license for the Verona Area Community Theater event on Nov. 21, 2025; motion passed.
• Approve construction inspection services contracts: JT Engineering for Apex Phase 2 (not to exceed $89,720) and KL Engineering for Avalon Ridge inspection (not to exceed $113,337.60). Staff said developer(s) would pay inspection fees.
• Approve Fred Verona (Apex) Phase 2 development agreement contingent on final approval by the city attorney, city administrator and other applicable staff. Alder Helmke moved; motion passed.
Most motions were approved by voice vote; a roll‑call vote (recorded ayes) occurred for the later closed‑session motion related to the Argus Apartments item.
The council did not adopt new ordinances or appropriate additional funds beyond the items listed above at the Sept. 22 meeting.
