VERONA, Wis. — The Verona Common Council approved resolution R-26-002 on Jan. 26 directing city staff, elected leaders and fire/EMS leadership to participate in exploratory conversations with neighboring municipalities about collaborative or regional fire and EMS service models.
The resolution language — introduced by the mayor and explained by city staff — states the city’s appreciation for current fire and EMS professionals while recognizing changing conditions such as staffing, training and capital needs warrant periodic review of delivery models. The measure authorizes the city administrator, fire and EMS leadership, and appropriate staff to participate in discussions and to report back to the council; it specifically notes no particular outcome is presumed.
Alder Lytle, who said he serves on the Fitzrona EMS commission, urged that Verona formally express interest so it is not excluded from conversations with potential partners. Chief Anderson described the topic as controversial but urged information-gathering, and Interim Chief McRae said he is still learning about district structures and also supports gathering more information.
Councilors asked which communities were involved in preliminary talks; the mayor and chiefs said Fitchburg and Oregon are core participants and McFarland has attended as an observer, while other communities have expressed interest. Alders also asked whether adopting the resolution would commit Verona financially; staff and council responded that there is no monetary commitment in the resolution and any future financial contributions would require separate council approval.
The council approved the resolution by voice vote. Staff will provide updates to the council as discussions progress.
