Bluffdale — During public comment at the Dec. 10 council meeting, resident Alan Larson said he helped form a local group called Utahns for Nuclear Transparency to oppose uranium enrichment projects in Utah and to press officials for greater transparency.
Larson told the council: "we now have, over the last 6 weeks, formed a group called Utahns for Nuclear Transparency... approximately 73% of the individuals we surveyed have huge concerns about the nuclear, the uranium enrichment plant," and said the group has been meeting with mayors and plans to meet with the governor. He asked the city to reverse an email the city sent to the state that indicated support and said the group may seek temporary injunctions in cases where they find lack of transparency.
The council did not take immediate action on Larson’s request during the meeting. No city staff response addressing the substance of the enrichment concerns is recorded in the meeting transcript; staff and council noted other agenda business and moved forward with scheduled votes.
What’s next: Larson said the group plans further outreach to mayors and a meeting with the governor; any formal request for city action would need to be brought back to council for consideration.
