Middle-school student urges Sylvania board to remove cosplay restriction from dress code

Connor Smith, a middle-school student, used the public-comment period Monday to protest a newly added cosplay restriction to the Sylvania Schools dress code, saying it unnecessarily limits student self-expression.
“My name is Connor Smith… I live at 3815 Corey Road,” he told the board and said the cosplay rule would ban common items such as tails or themed accessories that students wear to express themselves. He said he distributed a petition to three grade levels and collected more than 120 signatures, and argued that existing dress-code rules already address disruptive or offensive attire.
“I understand that over elaborate cosplay can distract students and teachers… however, the already existing dress code restrictions would help ensure things do not go out of hand,” Connor said, urging the board to remove the portion of the rule that broadly defines cosplay and limits animal-related apparel.
Board members did not respond with a decision during the meeting; the comment was recorded during the non-agenda public-comment period and will be part of the board record for any future policy discussion.
