Commission pledges $24,340 toward high-school welding lab to expand local trades training

The Hampshire County Commission voted Jan. 27 to provide up to $24,340 in support of a workforce-development project to establish welding instruction at Hampshire High School and shared trade sites.
Presenters said the overall project cost is about $95,000. Eastern Technical Institute would cover roughly $61,000 of the work, Hampshire High School about $10,000, and the development authority asked the commission to cover the remaining $24,340 to upgrade welding bays, purchase additional welders and make the space suitable for both school-day dual-credit classes and evening adult learners.
Julie Landis, representing Hampshire High School, said the program would allow students to earn dual credit and that Eastern could use the equipment for adult learners in the evenings. The presenters said their goal is to begin classes in August and noted good community interest in signing up.
Commissioners discussed timing and budget constraints and agreed to provide 'availability of funds' and follow up on cash-flow mechanics; the motion to support the partnership passed unanimously.
