Parks and Rec: youth leagues, new pickleball offering and LED scoreboards across complex

Culpeper County Parks and Recreation officials described recent youth-program successes, new league offerings and facility upgrades on a local recreation broadcast.

Summer Koontz, recreation coordinator for activity athletics, said the department just wrapped up performance cheer teams (ages 6–12) and hosted youth basketball clinics for multiple age groups to prepare players for the upcoming summer leagues. "All the girls had a blast…we had a lot of people come out and watch them, which was great," she said.

Koontz said volleyball registration opened at midnight and many divisions filled by 9 a.m., and announced a new pickleball league scheduled for April–May with weekly practices and a short game season. The department also runs a monthly homeschool gym program that typically draws about 20 children.

On facilities, Director Andrew Varney said LED scoreboards are being installed on seven baseball/softball fields (two softball, four majors, one junior) and would be ready before spring operations, improving wayfinding and promoting Culpeper County Parks and Recreation branding at events. Varney also described Mountain Run Lake Park work (new restrooms, hardscaping and trails) and potential paving projects at Lynn and Spillman parks.

Koontz encouraged residents to register for leagues and programs via the department website; Varney emphasized community partnerships and volunteer support as central to many projects and programs.

Next steps: registration is open for several spring and summer leagues; the scoreboard installations and park-improvement projects will continue through spring.
