Planning director reports progress on RHNA and zoning‑code update

At the end of the Jan. 26 meeting the planning director reported progress on the city's Regional Housing Needs Allocation (RHNA): the city has entitled or permitted 858 of the 2,557 units required for the current RHNA cycle, with additional projects in the pipeline.
Staff said the city is moving forward with a zoning‑code update that would focus growth along existing commercial corridors (including Palm and Indian Canyon and other arterials) and would allow three, five and seven‑story mixed‑use buildings in targeted areas. The director said the update work recognizes Palm Springs’ constrained developable land base and emphasized the need for careful transitions between new higher‑density zones and existing neighborhoods.
Staff also noted recent and pending affordable‑housing projects and said the city will continue public engagement and code drafting to ensure clearer standards and smoother transitions.
