Lewiston City Council on Monday authorized the use of $40,000 from the council contingency fund to cover tree-removal and cleanup costs resulting from a Dec. 16, 2025 windstorm.
City Treasurer Amy Gordon told the council the city employed a professional tree-removal contractor to remove fallen trees, grind stumps, and clear hazardous material at some sites where right-of-way trees fell onto private property. The invoices total $39,300; staff have submitted the paperwork to the city's insurance carrier but said they had not yet confirmed reimbursements. Gordon said the city's usual contingency was $50,000 but that the council reduced it to $40,000 during budget amendments to fund other priorities.
Councilor Klieberg moved to authorize the contingency transfer; Councilor Wright seconded. The motion carried.
Gordon said staff would transfer funds internally to cover Parks Department expenses and would amend the budget if insurance reimbursements arrive later.
What comes next: Staff will process payments, continue insurance follow-up and return any recovered funds to contingency or the Parks budget as appropriate.
