Committee introduces commercial driver licensing measure and construction-zone lighting bill

The House Committee on Transportation formally introduced two measures during its session.
Representative Van Halton introduced RS2838 on behalf of Representative Sherry Brantley. Van Halton described it as "a Kansas roadway accountability bill," and read language saying the act concerns driver’s licensing under the Kansas Uniform Commercial Driver's License Act and would require certain identification documents and English-language proficiencies for commercial drivers while establishing fines and provisions impacting employers and nonresident commercial driver's license holders.
Michael White, executive director of the Kansas Contractors Association, introduced RS2891 and said the bill would update Kansas construction zone lighting laws to improve safety for construction workers: "we need to update our construction zone lighting laws in the state of Kansas, and this is an attempt to do that, keep our construction workers safer," he said.
The chair asked for objections to each introduction; none were raised and both bills were introduced to the committee record. There were no formal motions, seconds or votes recorded on the floor beyond the chair’s call for objections.
