The Crown Point City Board of Zoning Appeals voted Jan. 26 to approve a variance allowing a primary structure to exceed the 35-foot height limit and reach 59 feet at 125 South Superior Drive for a proposed Holiday Inn Express.
Amit Shaw, representing Crown Point Investment LLC, told the board the brand for the hotel requires at least four stories; the petitioner said lot geometry and market visibility from the nearby highway led them to propose a five-story (59-foot) building. Staff said notices were properly sent and the project had been reviewed twice by the planning commission as a workshop; staff recorded no calls of support and some neighbor inquiries related to proximity.
Board members questioned story count, building orientation relative to nearby residences and exterior materials. Shaw said the hotel would face north, providing approximately 40–50 feet of separation to residential property lines, use primarily brick materials and include landscaping and a tree buffer along the creek portion of the site.
After discussion a motion to adopt findings of fact and approve the petition passed by roll call (majority yes, one no). The petitioner thanked the board and was instructed to coordinate architectural standards and landscape screening with planning staff and the planning commission as the site plan advances.
