Panel clears bill to modernize Florida trademark registration system

TALLAHASSEE — The Transportation and Economic Development Budget Subcommittee voted to advance CS for HB 679, a bill from Representative Greco that modernizes Florida's trademark registration process to mirror federal practice.
Representative Greco said the bill requires applicants to identify the goods or services associated with a mark, provide proof the mark is used in commerce, and enables streamlined online filing and renewals to make the system more efficient for Florida businesses.
During public testimony Doug Bell of the Business Law Section of the Florida Bar waved in support and no members asked substantive questions. After a brief close the clerk called the roll and the chair announced CS for HB 679 "passing favorably."
Supporters said the changes will reduce uncertainty for businesses and bring state practice in line with federal standards; the committee did not amend the bill in the hearing. The measure will proceed to the next legislative stage for further consideration.
