TPAC asks agency to cover sealing, removal and storage of 33 gateway mural panels; staff to proceed administratively

TPAC requested that the agency share the cost of preserving, removing and storing 33 gateway mural panels and suggested the agency cover half the sealing cost as the project is joint. A TPAC representative told the board Talent Maker City provided a quote and that "for the staffing supplies, and the program coordination management, it would cost around $5,000." The board discussed options for storage and public notice and raised no objections to staff handling the request administratively.

Alex, speaking for staff, said the gateway budget line item is the appropriate source for the expense and described available storage options. "One would be using the storage container out here. We've largely emptied it, but I haven't had it yet removed because of this potential need," Alex said, adding that public works locations could also be used if appropriate and staff would ensure protections while in storage.

Board members asked that staff plan public communications ahead of any removal so residents understand why the murals will be taken down and where they will be stored. Member Coley suggested a press release or notice explaining what is happening at the gateway site; staff agreed that public outreach makes sense. Because the preservation expense falls within staff spending limits, the presiding officer asked for objections and, hearing none, directed staff to proceed without a formal vote.

Next steps: staff will coordinate with TPAC to arrange sealing, removal and secure storage, and to prepare public communications before removal.
