Madam Coroner (speaker 8) told the committee the production — a U.S. version of the UK series Cause of Death — would be observational, “not staged and it does not interfere with operations,” and that the production company will pay the coroner’s office $60,000 to offset staff time, administrative coordination and operational impacts. “Those funds are intended to support our existing mission and to ensure that there's no financial burden to the city,” she said.
Councilors asked how cases would be selected and whether family privacy would be protected. The coroner said she makes the final decision on which cases move forward and that families must give consent before any filming. She added the production company is not interested in homicides and is focused on illustrating medical-legal death investigation work: “They are more interested in the family understanding the cause of death.”
The coroner gave a tentative timeline: filming to start in mid-February and continue about 4½–5 months, with initial airing of the U.K. version expected around July or August before any U.S. distribution. She said the $60,000 will be provided in multiple deposits and may be used for overtime and equipment where necessary.
Chair Leroy Robinson called for a voice vote after a motion and second; members responded “aye” and the motion carried by voice vote. The committee did not record a roll-call tally in the transcript.
