Piedmont Community Charter board approves "exclusion" option as alternative to expulsion

The Piedmont Community Charter School Board of Directors voted unanimously Jan. 20 to amend the school's charter to add an "exclusion" disciplinary option that offers administrators an alternative to long-term suspension or expulsion.
Speaker 6, a governance committee member, told the board the committee met on Jan. 12 and proposed language under subparagraph b to allow exclusion in serious discipline situations that would otherwise lead to expulsion. Speaker 6 said the language was updated after review with the school attorney and distributed to board members by email prior to the meeting.
Speaker 2 clarified implementation steps and timing: "We just have to do an amend in order to use exclusion, we have to amend our charter and we have to update our policy 300. It's already in our new charter agreement that we got at the renewal that we can use it, but it's gotta be in those 3 places. So we wouldn't even use exclusion until next year." The board emphasized those procedural steps before the option can be used.
Speaker 1 raised a concern about safety and placement, noting that exclusion should not simply move a student to another school where the behavior could recur. The governance committee had said the amendment envisions an alternative placement option for parents and administrators short of expulsion.
Speaker 4 moved to approve the suggested charter amendment regarding exclusion, Speaker 2 seconded, and Speaker 1 announced the motion passed unanimously.
The board instructed staff to amend the charter documents and update Series 300 disciplinary policies so the exclusion option can be implemented beginning in the next school year.
