Council hears Earthwise Living Day budget change; committee requests small adjustment amid accounting shifts

Councilors on Nov. 4 reviewed a request from the Earthwise Living Committee for a $4,788 adjustment to next year’s event budget after staff revised how overtime and facility costs are reported.
Crystal Miranda, staff liaison, said the committee collected about $5,800 in sponsorships while expenses ran about $6,200; the city budget includes $2,700 and a $2,500 rollover from last year. Miranda said this year staff also budgeted $6,500 for overtime to reflect the actual city labor that supports the event; when those staffing costs are included, the committee’s prior assertion that the event was revenue-neutral no longer holds.
Some councilors urged not to discourage volunteer fundraising by reclaiming sponsorship money; others stressed transparent accounting and asked that any recurring surpluses and spending be clearly documented. Councilors noted increased vendor fees and other rising costs since the event’s early years.
The council agreed to return the item Nov. 18 with the adjusted fiscal-impact language and recommended communications and oversight clarifications.
No vote was taken Nov. 4.
