Mid Missouri Legal Services piloted an online intake that uses AI to classify legal problems (mapped to LegalServer problem codes), includes informed opt-in for AI use, and couples intake with automated scheduling to reduce failed callback attempts and increase completed intakes.
Mid Missouri Legal Services is deploying AI to classify plain-language online intake submissions and improve access and accuracy for a primarily rural 11-county service area, Executive Director Kirsten Dunham said on Jan. 30.
Dunham described a small staff (19 total, five on intake) that previously relied on phone callbacks and experienced large callback lists and low pickup rates. The organization used business-process improvement mapping and a TIG grant to redesign intake, build a more robust online form and add automated scheduling so applicants can pick a time when they are available for an intake call.
For classification, Mid Missouri is using LegalServer problem codes as the primary taxonomy and has layered AI tools to assist in identifying legal issues from free-text submissions. The online intake makes AI optional: applicants see an informed-consent checkbox (pre-checked to allow opt-out) with an explanatory dropdown describing how AI will be used, that it will not affect eligibility decisions, and that users can review and correct AI suggestions. Dunham said the group did a soft launch with partners in October to work out mapping issues into LegalServer and continues to iterate on accuracy.
Dunham said the organization prioritized safety, accessibility and preserving human review for complex or sensitive cases, and will expand training for specialty panels if the tool performs well.
