Veterans services: Val Verde office reports 2025 workload, plans monthly workshops

The Val Verde County Veterans Service Office briefed the commissioners on Jan. 14 about last quarter and full-year 2025 activity, highlighting outreach and transportation services and new monthly workshops aimed at helping veterans navigate benefits.
The officer reporting to the court said the office recorded 267 walk-ins and 7 transports in the quarter being discussed and summarized 2025 totals as "a total of 3,500 walk ins, 470 trips out of town, and a 130 local trips." He said the office's local transportation program, supported by county funds, has helped veterans reach medical appointments and pick up medication.
The office also described a recent coordinated response with law enforcement and mental-health partners that stabilized a veteran in crisis and emphasized the financial impact of securing higher disability ratings for veterans. "When a veteran applies to disability benefits... we're seeing 50-70% ratings right out of the gate," the officer said, adding that those improvements translate into millions of dollars returned to the community.
To expand services, the office will begin monthly workshops at the county library on the first Friday of each month, with each session focused on a different theme to educate veterans on benefits and claims processes. Commissioners praised the office's work and took no formal action beyond accepting the report.
