Val Verde County Commissioners voted Jan. 14 to allocate $5,000 to the Val Verde County Historical Commission to pay for a plaque from the Alamo Letter Society that will display the historic "Victory or Death" letter.
Amira Usman, vice chair of the Val Verde County Historical Commission, told the court the project would post a plaque and host an event at the courthouse when delivery is scheduled. "The cost of the plaque is what we're requesting today, is $5,000," Usman said, asking the court to record the allocation as a budgeted line item.
Commissioner Flores moved the motion to allocate the funds, which Commissioner Wardlaw seconded. The court approved the donation by voice vote.
Usman said the society (alamoletter.com) is coordinating deliveries; 43 counties already have dates scheduled and the commission will announce the date and event details after the foundry confirms delivery. The court recorded the allocation as a budgeted expense and thanked the Historical Commission for its work.
No further conditions or contingencies were attached to the allocation in the public discussion.
